Jadumani Singh overcomes weight class change, storms into CWG Round of 16
India's Jadumani Singh Mandengbam made a successful transition to a higher weight category as he defeated Scotland's Aaron Cullen in the men's 55kg boxing Round of 32 at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday.
The unanimous 5-0 decision by the judges reflected the Manipuri boxer's dominance in the bout, setting up a Round of 16 clash later in the tournament.
Jadumani, 23, had built his reputation in the 50kg category, but with all Olympic and Commonwealth weight classes starting from 55kg for men, he made the strategic decision to move up five kilograms. The weight gain required careful planning and adaptation, which he executed effectively in his opening match.
Fighting in an unfamiliar weight category at a major event, Jadumani showcased sharp footwork and precise punching to outclass the home favourite. The judges scored every round in his favour, confirming his progress in the competition.
His victory highlights the depth of Indian boxing talent and the adaptability required at the international level. The Commonwealth Games do not have seeding, making every bout a fresh challenge.
