Inside a Charminar Godown: H-FAST Raid Uncovers Adulterated Chicken, Banned Colours
The Hyderabad Food Adulteration Surveillance Team (H-FAST), in coordination with the Food Safety Department, conducted a raid at an unlicensed fast food godown in the Charminar area on Friday, June 19. Two individuals were taken into custody during the operation.
The raid targeted Al Akbar Fast Food and Godown, located at New Laad Bazar, Panch Mohalla, under the jurisdiction of the Hussaini Alam police station. Authorities seized approximately 110 kg of prepared fried chicken, six tins of loose cooking oil (each containing 15 litres), and artificial chemical food colours.
According to officials, the inspection was prompted by specific information about unsafe food preparation practices. During the raid, inspectors found that food items were being prepared and stored in unhygienic conditions, posing a potential risk to public health.
The establishment was found operating without a mandatory licence from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The inspection also revealed the use of prohibited artificial food colours—identified as MSK Lion Green and Raspberry Red—reuse of stale cooking oil, absence of water quality certification, and inadequate hygiene and pest-control measures.
A case has been registered at the Hussaini Alam police station under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and other relevant laws. The accused individuals and the seized materials have been handed over to the police for further action.
Officials warned that consumption of adulterated or improperly stored food can lead to food poisoning, gastrointestinal infections, allergic reactions, and other health complications.
The Hyderabad City Police reiterated its commitment to strict action against food adulteration. Citizens were urged to purchase food only from licensed establishments and to report any unsafe food practices to the authorities.
