Indian Seafarer Killed in Black Sea Attack on Commercial Vessel, MEA Confirms

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Friday that an Indian national was killed in an attack on a commercial vessel in the Black Sea on July 18. The ship, MV OMORFI, was reportedly transiting Russian territorial waters at the time of the incident.

According to the MEA, the vessel had 10 crew members on board, including three Indian nationals. The attack resulted in the death of one Indian seafarer, while the other two Indians are reported to be safe. The Ministry extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved family.

India's diplomatic mission in Russia has reached out to relevant authorities and is working to provide all possible assistance to the affected family, the MEA stated.

In a strongly worded statement, the MEA condemned the attack, saying, 'India unequivocally condemns such attacks targeting commercial shipping and placing the lives of innocent civilian crew members at risk. It is a matter of serious concern that the freedom of navigation and international commerce is facing increasing threats.'

The Ministry called on all parties to uphold international obligations to ensure the safety and security of maritime navigation and the uninterrupted flow of global commerce.

The incident comes days after four Indians were among ten killed in an attack on the commercial vessel MV Golden Leo off the coast of Ukraine on July 19. Following that attack, India summoned the Russian Charge d'Affaires in New Delhi.

The MEA urged Indian citizens to assess the security situation before taking up jobs in maritime conflict zones.
