Indian national stabbed multiple times in US; political leader seeks government intervention
An Indian national from Hyderabad, Syed Sohail Uddin, was reportedly stabbed multiple times in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States, according to police statements. The incident took place on July 14, when the suspect approached the victim and, after a brief interaction, attacked him with a knife. Bystanders intervened and subdued the assailant until police arrived. Mr. Sohail was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery.
The West Valley City Police stated they are investigating possible motives and any relationship between the suspect and the victim. Some US media outlets have reported that the attack was motivated by the victim's religion, but the police have not confirmed this. The suspect has been identified as Peter Michael Larsen.
Following the incident, Majlis Bachao Tahreek (MBT) leader Amjed Ullah Khan wrote to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, requesting immediate consular assistance and legal support for Mr. Sohail. Khan also urged the government to ensure the safety of Indian nationals abroad, particularly those from minority communities, and to issue visas to Mr. Sohail's family on humanitarian grounds.
Mr. Sohail, a native of Toli Chowki in Hyderabad, had been working in the US for about two years. Khan, a former corporator, met with Mr. Sohail's family to offer support and inquire about his condition.
The Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., has been contacted to provide necessary assistance and coordinate with local authorities. The Ministry of External Affairs has not yet issued a public statement on the matter.
