India Takes Up US Visa Curbs with Washington, Says Will Ease Hardships for Students and Travellers
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday stated that while visa regulations and immigration policies are sovereign matters of any country, India will continue to engage with the United States to address difficulties faced by Indian travellers and students.
Responding to queries about tighter US visa rules for foreign students, exchange visitors, and journalists, the MEA spokesperson said, “When issues concerning genuine travellers seeking to visit the US are brought to our attention, we take them up with the US side to minimise difficulties for our people.”
The new regulations, announced by the US Department of Homeland Security on Thursday, establish fixed periods of admission for non-immigrant visa holders in the F (student), J (exchange visitor), and I (journalist) categories. The move has raised concerns among Indian students and professionals who frequently travel to the US.
The MEA’s statement underscores India’s commitment to protecting the interests of its citizens abroad while respecting the sovereign rights of other nations. The government is expected to continue diplomatic discussions to ensure that legitimate travellers are not unduly inconvenienced.
