India revs up for Formula One return by 2028 with new task force
The Indian government has moved a step closer to bringing Formula One back to the country, with the sports ministry forming a task force to accelerate the hosting of major motorsport events. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced the initiative on Saturday, stating that the goal is to see Formula One return to India by 2028.
Mandaviya said the decision followed a meeting with key stakeholders, including officials from Formula One, the Adani Group (which owns the Buddh International Circuit), the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), and young racers and motorsport enthusiasts. The task force will conduct a detailed assessment of India's motorsports ecosystem and identify challenges hindering its growth.
The Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida last hosted a Formula One Grand Prix in 2013. The race was dropped from the calendar due to disputes over taxation and infrastructure issues. Since then, there have been sporadic efforts to revive the event, but without concrete progress.
The formation of the task force signals renewed government interest in motorsports. Mandaviya noted that the initiative aims to not only bring back Formula One but also promote grassroots motorsports and develop talent. “We want to create an ecosystem where young Indian racers can compete globally and inspire the next generation,” he said.
Industry experts have welcomed the move but caution that significant hurdles remain. Hosting a Formula One race involves high costs, including a substantial hosting fee, track upgrades, and compliance with safety standards. Additionally, sustained government support and private investment will be crucial.
Formula One management has expressed interest in returning to India, particularly given the country's large and growing market. However, no official agreement has been reached. The task force is expected to submit its recommendations within six months, which could pave the way for negotiations.
Motorsport enthusiasts and stakeholders have long pushed for a revival of the Indian Grand Prix. The country had one of the most modern tracks in the region, designed by renowned architect Hermann Tilke. If successful, the return of Formula One could boost tourism, create jobs, and enhance India's image as a global sports destination.
