India Launches Four Digital Policing Apps to Speed Up Criminal Investigations
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday launched four digital applications aimed at integrating criminal investigation and prosecution processes. The apps—Abhigyan, Criminal Procedure Identification (CrPI), e-prosecution 2.0, and e-forensics 2.0—are designed to create a seamless digital chain within the Integrated Criminal Justice System (ICJS), promising faster investigations and prosecutions through technology.
The National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) and CrPI will help identify offenders, while the Crime and Criminal Tracking and Network System (CCTNS) and Crime Multi Agency Centre (Cri-MAC) will connect and support investigations. E-forensics is intended to strengthen evidence collection, and e-prosecution aims to drive cases toward conviction.
According to the Home Minister, the apps will equip agencies with tools for speed and accuracy in justice delivery, enabling instant fingerprint matching, integrated DNA, iris, and face matching, and seamless digital coordination among agencies. The Abhigyan app allows field police personnel to search NAFIS, which contains 1.3 crore fingerprints, using their smartphones for real-time suspect identification. The app is secured through two-step authentication.
These applications are part of ongoing efforts to modernize India's criminal justice system, reducing manual processes and delays. The launch follows a series of posts on social media over the past four days detailing each app's functions.
