Income Tax Refund Delayed? Know the Common Reasons and How to Check Status
Thousands of taxpayers across India are awaiting income tax refunds after filing their returns for Assessment Year 2026-27. While the Income Tax Department has processed a significant number of returns swiftly, a section of taxpayers continue to face delays. Tax experts point out that most delays arise from verification issues, incorrect details, or mismatches in tax records. Understanding these reasons can help taxpayers take corrective action and avoid unnecessary stress.
Personal finance expert Sanket Mishra, a SEBI-registered investment adviser, recommends that taxpayers complete e-verification as soon as possible, pre-validate their bank account, match details with the Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Form 26AS, and ensure PAN-Aadhaar linkage. Following these steps can significantly reduce errors and expedite refund processing.
Pending E-Verification
One of the most common reasons for a delayed refund is the failure to complete e-verification after filing the return. An Income Tax Return (ITR) is not considered fully filed until it has been verified. If verification remains pending, the refund cannot be processed. Taxpayers can verify their returns through Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or by sending a signed physical copy to the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) in Bengaluru.
Mismatches in AIS, Form 26AS, or TDS Details
Taxpayers should ensure that the income and tax details reported in their ITR match the information available in the Annual Information Statement (AIS), Form 26AS, and TDS certificates. Even minor discrepancies can trigger additional checks and slow down the refund process. It is advisable to reconcile these documents before filing to minimise errors.
Incorrect or Unvalidated Bank Account
Refunds are credited directly to the bank account mentioned in the return. If the account number, IFSC code, or validation status is incorrect, the refund may be held up or fail altogether. Taxpayers should verify that their bank account is pre-validated on the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal. This can be done under the 'Profile' section by linking the bank account and confirming the validation process.
PAN and Aadhaar Issues
Problems related to PAN-Aadhaar linkage or mismatches in personal details can lead to additional verification requirements. The department may seek further confirmation before releasing the refund, resulting in longer waiting periods. Ensuring that PAN is linked with Aadhaar and that all personal details are consistent across records is essential.
Additional Scrutiny and Compliance Checks
Returns involving large refund claims, high-value transactions, unusual deductions, or complex financial information may be selected for additional review. In such cases, the department may carry out risk-based verification or other compliance checks before approving the refund. While this is a standard procedure, it can cause delays for certain taxpayers.
Errors in ITR Filing
Simple mistakes, such as entering incorrect income figures, omitting interest income, or reporting wrong tax credits, can result in processing delays. Taxpayers are advised to carefully review their returns before submission. If errors are discovered later, a revised return can be filed to correct them, though this may also affect the timeline.
Heavy Processing Load at CPC
The Centralised Processing Centre handles millions of returns every year. During peak filing season, the sheer volume can increase processing times, especially for cases that require manual review or additional verification. This is a systemic factor beyond the taxpayer's control.
Outstanding Tax Demand
If a taxpayer has pending tax liabilities from earlier assessment years, the Income Tax Department may adjust the current refund against those dues. This can reduce the refund amount or delay its payout. Taxpayers should check their accounts for any outstanding demands and resolve them to avoid surprises.
How to Check Refund Status
Taxpayers can track their refund status online through the Income Tax e-Filing Portal (incometax.gov.in). After logging in with PAN or Aadhaar and password, navigate to 'e-File' > 'Income Tax Returns' > 'View Filed Returns'. Click on 'View Details' next to Assessment Year 2026-27 to see real-time processing milestones. Alternatively, the 'Refund/Demand Status' service on the portal provides direct refund information.
A delayed refund does not necessarily mean there is a problem with your tax return. In many cases, the delay is caused by pending verification, data mismatches, or routine compliance checks. Taxpayers should regularly monitor their refund status, respond promptly to any notices, and resolve discrepancies as early as possible to avoid prolonged waiting periods.
