IMD Forecast: July Rainfall Likely Below Normal at 94% of Long-Term Average

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released its monthly forecast for July, indicating that the average rainfall over the country is expected to be below normal. In its statement on Tuesday (June 30, 2026), the IMD said the monthly rainfall is likely to be 94% of the long-period average (LPA) for July, which is based on data from 1971 to 2020.

The LPA rainfall over India in July is about 280.4 mm. The LPA refers to the average rainfall recorded over a specific region for a given period, such as a month or a season, calculated over a long duration, typically 30 to 50 years.

While most parts of the country are expected to receive below-normal rainfall, some regions may see normal to above-normal precipitation. These include areas of northwest and northeast India, east-central India, and the eastern peninsular region.

Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general of meteorology at the IMD, stated: “During July, below-normal rainfall is likely across most parts of the country except some areas of northwest and northeast India, east-central India and the eastern peninsular region where normal to above-normal rainfall is likely.”

The forecast provides crucial information for agriculture, water management, and disaster preparedness. The IMD continues to monitor weather patterns and will update its projections as necessary.
