IIT Bombay Wins Two Global Titles at RoboSub 2026 Underwater Robotics Competition

The Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) team of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has achieved a significant milestone at the international RoboSub 2026 competition, held from July 11 to 16 in Irvine, California. The team, known as AUV-IITB, secured first place in the Overall Wildcard Challenge and the Overall Website Evaluation, competing against 58 teams from nine countries.

RoboSub is a global competition organised to present participants with simplified versions of real-world challenges faced by the underwater maritime industry. These include oceanographic exploration and mapping, detection and manipulation of objects, and pipeline identification and tracking. The 29th edition of the event took place at the Woollett Aquatics Center, with teams representing Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, India, Mexico, Poland, Singapore, Turkey, and the United States.

In a social media post on X, the institute announced the achievement, stating: "IIT Bombay DEXA AUV Triumphs at RoboSub 2026, California! We are thrilled to announce that AUV-IIT Bombay delivered an outstanding performance at the global RoboSub 2026 competition in California, competing against 58 elite teams from 9 countries!" The institute also highlighted the deployment of its flagship vehicle, Matsya 7, working in parallel with the new Mini Matsya. This dual-vehicle synergy, the team explained, allows the vehicles to execute complex underwater tasks with greater speed and accuracy.

Beyond the two overall titles, AUV-IITB finished fifth in the flagship Global Autonomy Challenge, secured second place in the MathWorks Simulation Challenge, tied for third in Design Documentation, and took third place for the Technical Design Report. The National University of Singapore won first place in Design Documentation, with IIT Bombay finishing third in that category.

The competition tested autonomous underwater vehicles in missions inspired by disaster response and harbour operations, requiring teams to solve navigation, object manipulation, and mapping problems in a controlled aquatic environment. For IIT Bombay, the results reflect sustained student-led research and development in marine robotics. The team’s success is notable given the scale and international nature of the event, which draws some of the best university teams from around the world.

This achievement adds to IIT Bombay’s growing record in robotics competitions. It also underscores the strength of Indian engineering education in preparing students to tackle frontier technological problems. The outcomes at RoboSub 2026 are expected to boost interest in underwater robotics research and development within academic institutions in India.

The team’s performance in both the simulation and documentation categories indicates a balanced skill set — from software development and vehicle design to technical communication and web presentation. The win in the Overall Website Evaluation highlights the importance of clear outreach and documentation in engineering projects, while the Wildcard Challenge win demonstrates adaptability in tackling unforeseen tasks.

AUV-IITB’s showing at RoboSub 2026 serves as an example of how structured academic programmes and dedicated student effort can result in measurable global recognition.
