Hyderabad Police Seize 77,500 Sedative Tablets, 170 Cough Syrup Bottles; Two Arrested
The Hyderabad Police’s CCS Special Crime team, in coordination with the Habib Nagar police, arrested two individuals for allegedly possessing and selling large quantities of prescription sedative tablets and cough syrup without authorisation. The operation resulted in the seizure of 77,700 tablets and 170 bottles of cough syrup, collectively valued at approximately ₹10 lakh.
The arrested were identified as Mohammed Sarwar alias Rahim (30), a driver from Mangar Basti in Afzal Sagar, Mallepally, and Mohammed Rabbani (32), a band master from Afzal Sagar, Mallepally. Police said six other suspects—identified as Jammu Bhai, Mahadhari, Veerdhari, Ichhadhari, Aman Lal and Kohinoor—are absconding.
During the operation, police seized 49,200 Nitrazom-10 tablets packed in 164 boxes, 18,300 Nitcor-10 tablets in 61 boxes, 10,200 Nitravet-10 tablets in 34 boxes, and 170 bottles of Choco cough syrup, each containing 100 ml.
According to the police, the accused allegedly procured prescription medicines from suppliers in Bidar without valid medical prescriptions and transported them to Hyderabad for illegal sale. The drugs were reportedly sold at inflated prices to customers across the city without any legal authorisation.
The investigation revealed that habitual offenders, potential criminals and several youngsters were purchasing the tablets and cough syrup for their intoxicating effects rather than for legitimate medical use, the police added.
