Hyderabad food safety raids: 15 tonnes of adulterated sweets, savouries seized

Hyderabad, August 25, 2026: In a coordinated enforcement drive, the Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE) seized 15 tonnes of adulterated and unhygienic food products from sweet and savoury manufacturing and retail establishments across the city on Tuesday. The seized goods, valued at approximately ₹30 lakh, were found in conditions that violated food safety norms, officials said.

The operation involved 15 specialised teams comprising Food Safety Officers and police personnel. They inspected 32 manufacturing and retail units, collecting 35 food samples for laboratory testing on suspicion of adulteration. The inspections revealed severe pest and rodent infestations, fungal-infested vegetables, improper storage practices, and violations of packaging and labelling norms. Officials also flagged misleading claims and advertisements on food products, raising concerns over consumer safety and regulatory compliance.

As part of the enforcement action, the licence of M/s Burfi Ghar in Bachupally was suspended, and its operations were halted immediately following the violations found at the establishment. In addition, authorities issued 12 improvement notices and four show-cause notices to other establishments found to be violating food safety regulations.

The drive underscores the state's ongoing efforts to enforce the Food Safety and Standards Act, which mandates hygiene, proper labelling, and honest advertising. TG SAFE, established to streamline food and drug regulation in Telangana, has been conducting surprise inspections to curb adulteration and protect public health. Officials said that the seized products will be destroyed as per procedure, and the pending laboratory results could lead to further legal action against the offenders.

Consumers are advised to check for FSSAI licence numbers, packaging integrity, and expiry dates while purchasing sweets and savouries, and to report any suspected adulteration to the authorities. The agency has urged the public to remain vigilant, as festive seasons often see a spike in demand for such products and, consequently, a higher risk of substandard supplies.
