HSBC India opens second Kerala branch in Thiruvananthapuram
HSBC India on Thursday inaugurated its new branch in Thiruvananthapuram, marking the bank's second presence in Kerala after its existing branch in Kochi. The new branch is located in the state capital, filling a gap left by the closure of an earlier HSBC branch at Vellayambalam several years ago.
Speaking to mediapersons after the inauguration, Sandeep Batra, Head of Wealth and Premier Banking at HSBC India, said Kerala has a strong base of globally connected families and entrepreneurs, supported by one of India's most significant NRI communities. He noted that the bank sees considerable potential in the state's evolving economic landscape.
“Kerala's economy is poised for significant transformation and banks are expected to play a key role in supporting growth through active participation in developmental initiatives and financing of large-scale infrastructure,” Batra said.
The Thiruvananthapuram branch is part of 20 new branches HSBC India has opened across the country after receiving approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in January 2025. The expansion reflects the bank's strategy to strengthen its presence in key Indian markets, particularly in regions with strong cross-border linkages.
HSBC India, a subsidiary of the global banking group, offers a range of services including wealth management, retail banking, and corporate banking. The new branch aims to cater to the needs of affluent customers, professionals, and business owners in the capital city, with a focus on wealth and premier banking services.
Kerala has long been a significant contributor to India's remittance inflows, with a large diaspora working in the Gulf and other regions. This has made the state an attractive destination for banks seeking to tap into the financial needs of NRI families, including investment advisory, NRI banking, and wealth management services.
The opening of the new branch comes at a time when the state government is pushing for infrastructure development and investment in sectors such as tourism, technology, and healthcare. Financial institutions are expected to play a crucial role in financing these projects, and HSBC's entry into the capital is seen as a positive signal for the local economy.
Industry observers note that the presence of international banks in Thiruvananthapuram could enhance competition and bring global banking standards to the region. It may also benefit students and professionals who are planning to study or work abroad, as HSBC offers specialised services for such customers.
With the new branch, HSBC India now has more than 50 branches in the country, along with a network of ATMs and digital banking services. The bank said it remains committed to expanding its footprint in India, aligning with the country's growth story and the increasing demand for sophisticated banking solutions.
