Himachal on High Alert: Red Warning for Extremely Heavy Rain Over Next Two Days
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall across several districts of Himachal Pradesh for the next two days. The warning, which covers areas including Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, and Kangra, predicts rainfall exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours, posing risks of flash floods, landslides, and disruption to essential services.
According to IMD officials, a depression over the Bay of Bengal combined with strong monsoon winds is driving moisture into the region. The alert was upgraded from orange to red following an intensification of weather systems. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to stay indoors, avoid travel, and move to higher ground if necessary.
The state government has activated emergency response teams and pre-positioned rescue equipment in sensitive zones. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been put on standby. District magistrates have been directed to ensure that relief shelters remain open and stocked with essential supplies.
In the past, such extreme weather events have caused significant damage to infrastructure, including road blockages and damage to crops. The state's hill districts are particularly susceptible to landslides, and many roads have already been closed as a precaution. The Public Works Department has deployed machinery to clear debris promptly.
Local schools and colleges have been closed for the next two days, and public gatherings have been banned. Tourists have been urged to avoid travelling to hill stations during this period. The meteorological department has also warned of thunderstorm and lightning activity, advising people to stay away from open areas and tall structures.
The current spell of heavy rain comes after a relatively dry June, raising concerns about both flooding and water scarcity in the long term. Officials are monitoring river levels, particularly the Beas and Sutlej rivers, which are already flowing close to the danger mark at some points.
This red alert serves as a critical reminder of the increasing frequency of extreme weather events attributed to climate change. Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a rising trend in cloudbursts and flash floods in recent years, necessitating better preparedness and long-term resilience planning.
