Heavy Rain Triggers Waterlogging in Delhi-NCR; IMD Issues Red Alert
New Delhi, July 8: Heavy rainfall across the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday morning caused waterlogging in several areas, leading to traffic disruptions for commuters in Noida and Ghaziabad, officials said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'red' alert for Delhi, forecasting moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning through the day.
Waterlogging was reported at locations including the New Delhi Railway Station and Munirka, among others. Authorities advised residents to avoid waterlogged roads and use alternate routes.
In response to the situation, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with the chief ministers of Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir to assess the impact of heavy rains in those states. He assured them of central assistance, according to officials. The calls follow recent incidents such as a debris collapse in Kerala's Wayanad, flash floods in Jammu's Doda, and other disruptions in Maharashtra and Gujarat.
The IMD forecast widespread rainfall over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh until July 10. A fresh spell of rain is expected over Northeast Uttar Pradesh till July 13, while East Rajasthan may see similar activity on July 9.
On Wednesday, a significant monsoon spell brought relief from the heat across northern India. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather advisories and take precautions.
