Hamas Dissolves Gaza Government Body; Technocratic Committee Takes Over

The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas has dissolved the body that has governed the Gaza Strip for nearly two decades, according to a group official. The move clears the way for a technocratic committee to implement civilian rule in the territory.

Mohammed al-Farra, head of the government's emergency committee, submitted his resignation and decided to dissolve the committee to facilitate the administrative and governmental transition to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), Ismail al-Thawabta, head of Hamas' government media office, told AFP on Monday (July 6, 2026).

The NCAG was created by the Board of Peace, which United States President Donald Trump established when he brokered a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel in October 2025. The ceasefire ended months of conflict and set the stage for a political transition in Gaza.

Hamas has controlled Gaza since 2007 after winning elections and later ousting rival Fatah forces. The dissolution of its governing body marks a significant shift in the territory's administration, moving towards a technocratic committee intended to be non-partisan and focused on civilian governance.

The Board of Peace, which includes international and regional stakeholders, aims to oversee the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and support the establishment of a unified Palestinian government. The NCAG is expected to manage day-to-day affairs in Gaza until a broader political solution is reached.

No further details were provided on the timeline for the transition or the composition of the NCAG.
