Bangladesh Elects BNP's Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as President in Historic Vote

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been elected as the country's new President, securing a decisive victory in the first contested presidential election in 35 years.

Chief Election Commissioner and Election Returning Officer AMM Nasir Uddin announced that Mr. Alamgir received 255 votes, while his rival, Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed of the Liberal Democratic Party, secured 88 votes. The 11-party opposition alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami had nominated Mr. Ahmed for the post.

Out of 349 registered lawmakers, 343 cast their votes in the election, with six abstaining. The President-elect is scheduled to take the oath of office on Friday evening at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban, the official residence of the President.

The election became necessary after President Mohammed Shahabuddin, a close associate of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, resigned last month on grounds of ill health. Mr. Shahabuddin had not completed his five-year tenure.

This marks the first contested presidential election in Bangladesh since 1991. In the intervening decades, the office was primarily filled through consensus and uncontested votes, reflecting a tradition of political understanding among major parties.

The presidency in Bangladesh is largely a ceremonial position, with executive powers vested in the Prime Minister. However, the election holds political significance as it reflects the current balance of power in the parliament, where the BNP holds a majority.

The election was conducted peacefully, with the Election Commission overseeing the process. The peaceful transfer of the presidency comes at a time when Bangladesh continues to address various political and economic challenges. The BNP has expressed satisfaction with the outcome, while the opposition alliance has not yet issued an official statement.
