Haaland double sends Norway to World Cup quarter-finals, eliminates Brazil
Norway defeated Brazil 2-0 in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, advancing to their first quarter-final in the tournament. Erling Haaland scored both goals, the first a header in the 79th minute and the second a clinical finish later in the match.
Haaland’s first goal came against the run of play, as Brazil had controlled much of the second half. The Norwegian striker rose above defenders Gabriel and Marquinhos to meet a cross and power a header past goalkeeper Alisson Becker. His second goal showcased his composure, slotting the ball past Alisson after a counter-attack.
Norway’s victory ended Brazil’s campaign and intensified concerns about the decline of the five-time world champions. Brazil struggled in the qualifying stage and faced a talent shortage in several positions, a stark contrast to their historical depth. Norway, meanwhile, came into the tournament unbeaten in qualifying, including a 7-1 aggregate win over Italy.
Haaland was largely contained for most of the match by the Brazilian centre-back pairing, but he remained patient. “If I get a chance or two, it usually ends up as a goal. I don’t know how I do it, but that’s how I do it, so it’s all about staying focused,” Haaland said after the match.
The Norwegian team also benefited from strong performances by midfielder Martin Ødegaard and goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, who made several crucial saves. Norway will now face either Argentina or Mexico in the quarter-finals.
