Government Doctors’ Body Urges Tamil Nadu CM to Address Unmet Demands, Including Job for Covid-Warrior’s Widow
The Legal Coordination Committee (LCC) for Government Doctors has appealed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to fulfil a set of long-standing demands, including a government job for the widow of a doctor who died while treating COVID-19 patients.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the LCC requested that the wife of Dr. Vivekanandan, a government doctor who lost his life on duty during the pandemic, be provided with employment. The committee also urged the Chief Minister to grant pay band-4 benefits after 12 years of service, as outlined in Government Order 354.
Citing data from the National Statistical Office, the LCC noted that 43% of patients in Tamil Nadu—particularly those from marginalised communities—seek treatment in government hospitals. Despite this, the association said, adequate posts for doctors and nurses were not created under the previous AIADMK regime nor under the current DMK government.
The LCC expressed hope that the present government would address these issues, which it described as critical for the effective functioning of the public healthcare system. The appeal comes amid ongoing concerns about doctor shortages and workloads in state-run hospitals.
