Government Denies Cover-Up of Operation Sindoor Death Toll, Vows Transparency
The Government of India on Thursday categorically denied allegations that it had concealed information regarding casualties during Operation Sindoor. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, officials asserted that all relevant data has been shared with the appropriate oversight bodies and that there was no intention to mislead the public.
Operation Sindoor, a military campaign conducted earlier this year, has been the subject of controversy after reports emerged suggesting that the government had underreported the number of soldiers killed in action. Opposition parties had demanded a full disclosure, accusing the administration of a cover-up.
“The government has never hidden any information regarding the deaths in Operation Sindoor,” the statement read. “Every casualty has been recorded and communicated to the next of kin. We have also submitted complete figures to the parliamentary committee on defence.”
Defence officials further explained that initial confusion arose because of the time taken to confirm identities in the field, which led to delayed announcements. They assured that processes have been streamlined to prevent such delays in the future.
The government’s response comes amid growing pressure from veteran associations and opposition leaders who have demanded a detailed account of the operation. Several non-governmental organizations have also sought access to official records under the Right to Information Act.
Political analysts note that the issue could become a flashpoint in the ongoing parliamentary session, with opposition parties expected to raise questions about the government’s handling of the operation and its aftermath.
