Mumbai Landslide: Two Dead, Several Feared Trapped in Ghatkopar Chawl
At least two people have died and four to five others are feared trapped after a landslide struck a chawl in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area early Wednesday, officials said. The incident occurred at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, Ghatkopar, when a portion of a hillside collapsed onto two to three houses.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that the landslide was reported at 3:48 am. Initial reports suggested five to six people were trapped under the debris. Rescue operations were launched immediately by the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
BMC Mayor Ritu Tawde and Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Avinash Dhakne visited the site to assess the situation and coordinate relief efforts. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ganesh Shinde provided updates to reporters at the scene.
"Rescue operations are underway, with emergency response teams and local authorities continuing efforts at the site. While we cannot confirm the exact number at this stage, it is suspected that three to four people may still be trapped under the debris," DCP Shinde said.
"The bodies of those who lost their lives in the landslide have been sent to a hospital for further procedures. The Ghatkopar Police will take the necessary legal action and carry out further investigation in the matter," he added.
Two injured persons were admitted to the hospital. They were identified as Sohel Ansari, 18, who suffered a head injury, and Mohamad Ansari, 14, who sustained a back injury. Both are reported to be in stable condition.
This incident highlights the vulnerability of hillside settlements in Mumbai, particularly during the monsoon season. Authorities have urged residents in landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant and cooperate with evacuation orders when issued.
