Ghaziabad Man Dies from Injury Outside Police Booth; Delay in Help Alleged
A 22-year-old man died after bleeding outside a pink police booth in Ghaziabad's Bapudham area last Sunday, following a dispute over an auto-rickshaw fare. The incident has led to allegations of police inaction and delay in providing medical assistance.
According to the victim's family, Raj Kumar, a mechanic from Bihar's Siwan district, left for work on the morning of July 12. He later got into a fare dispute with an auto-rickshaw driver over Rs 20. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Upasana Pandey stated that both Kumar and the driver were intoxicated at the time.
Witnesses said Kumar and the driver arrived at the pink booth, which is staffed by women police personnel. Kumar began banging on the iron door of the booth, and when the policewomen reportedly advised him to go to another police station, he turned to the glass door. The glass shattered, causing a deep cut on his hand. Kumar collapsed due to severe bleeding.
Eyewitnesses claim the policewomen locked themselves inside the booth out of fear. A local shopkeeper called the police helpline. Two police personnel arrived on a motorcycle but no autorickshaw stopped to take the injured to the hospital. An ambulance arrived after nearly half an hour, and Kumar was taken to a medical facility, where he died during treatment.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), there was at least an hour's delay in taking him to the hospital. No arrests have been made in the case as of Tuesday.
Kumar's mother alleged that the policewomen did not provide help while her son lay bleeding. She demanded strict action against those responsible. Kumar leaves behind his eight-month-pregnant wife Gudiya Devi, a father who has been in a coma for two years, and a mentally challenged brother.
