Furnace Explosion at Jharkhand Steel Plant Injures Nine Workers

At least nine workers were injured when an explosion occurred in a furnace chamber at a private steel plant in Ramgarh district of Jharkhand on Sunday afternoon, according to an official. The incident took place at Murpa village under the Kuju outpost limits, said Chief Factory Inspector Manish Sinha.

Two of the injured workers, described as critically wounded, have been referred to a private hospital in Ranchi for advanced treatment. The others are being treated locally for burn injuries sustained after hot metal splashed following the blast.

Mr. Sinha told reporters that the factory inspector in Hazaribag has been directed to conduct an inquiry into the incident and submit a detailed report at the earliest. The exact cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, and officials said a thorough investigation is underway.

Industrial accidents in steel plants often involve high-temperature furnaces and molten metal, which present inherent risks to workers. According to safety norms under the Factories Act, 1948, and the Jharkhand Factories Rules, employers are required to maintain safety measures, conduct regular drills, and provide protective equipment to minimise such hazards.

Local authorities have cordoned off the area to facilitate rescue and investigation operations. Senior district officials, including police and medical teams, reached the spot soon after the incident was reported. The district administration has assured that all necessary medical assistance is being provided to the injured.

The private steel plant, whose name has not been officially disclosed, is one of several industrial units operating in the Kuju belt, an area known for mining and manufacturing activities. The region has seen occasional industrial mishaps in the past, raising concerns about enforcement of safety protocols.

Labour unions and safety activists have urged the state government to conduct a comprehensive safety audit of all such plants in the region. They argue that while investigations into specific incidents are important, systemic measures are needed to prevent future accidents.

Officials have not reported any fatalities so far. The condition of the two critically injured workers is said to be stable, according to hospital sources. Their families have been informed, and the company has said it will bear the cost of treatment.

Commissioner of Labour, Jharkhand, has been alerted, and the state labour department may issue show-cause notices if lapses in safety norms are found during the inquiry. The inspector's report is expected to shed light on whether the plant had the requisite safety clearances and whether standard operating procedures were followed.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of ensuring occupational safety in heavy industries, where a single lapse can lead to severe consequences. While investigations are in a preliminary stage, the priority remains the well-being of the injured workers and their families.
