From Macau Open to Olympic Glory: How PV Sindhu Forged Her Champion Spirit
PV Sindhu, one of only two non-Chinese players to win the Macau Open since it became a Grand Prix event (now Super 300), laid the foundation for her stellar career with three consecutive titles there from 2013 to 2015. These victories, achieved under the radar, were critical in building her mental resilience and competitive edge.
Before winning silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Sindhu had only five lower-tier Tour titles, three of which came at Macau. Her journey in these early years was marked by intense three-set battles and dramatic comebacks. In 2015 alone, she played 20 matches that went to three sets, losing most but learning invaluable lessons. One notable match at Macau against Lindaweni Fanetri saw her rally from 7-17 down to win.
Sindhu's coach Pullela Gopichand noted her emotional rollercoaster but praised her ability to bounce back. The Macau wins, though low-key, were instrumental in shaping the champion who would later dominate the world stage. Her development during this period, often overshadowed by Saina Nehwal's prominence, is a masterclass in perseverance and mental fortitude.
