Four High Courts to Get New Chief Justices as Collegium Approves Elevations

The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, has recommended the elevation of four sitting judges as Chief Justices of different high courts across the country. The decision was taken during a meeting held on August 6.

Justice V. Kameswar Rao, currently serving at the Delhi High Court, has been recommended for the position of Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. Justice Ravindra V. Ghuge, a judge at the Bombay High Court, has been recommended for the role of Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi, from the Allahabad High Court, has been named for the Chief Justice post at the Bombay High Court. Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has been recommended to serve as its Chief Justice.

In a separate decision, the Collegium has also recommended the transfer of two judges between high courts. Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak, presently at the Orissa High Court, has been transferred to the Gujarat High Court. Justice Krushna Ram Mohapatra, also from the Orissa High Court, has been transferred to the Chhattisgarh High Court.

The Collegium system, which comprises the Chief Justice of India and a group of senior Supreme Court judges, is responsible for recommending appointments and transfers of judges to high courts and the Supreme Court. These recommendations are then sent to the President of India for formal approval. The process is designed to ensure judicial independence by keeping the executive branch at a distance from judicial appointments.

The elevation of judges to the position of Chief Justice of a high court is a routine but significant administrative function.
