Five Women Suffer Complications After C-Sections at Telangana Government Hospital; Inquiry Launched

The Telangana government has ordered an inquiry into complications experienced by five women who underwent Caesarean section (C-section) surgeries at the Area Hospital in Banswada, Kamareddy district, on July 9 and 10. All five women have been shifted to Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad for specialised treatment.

A four-member committee has been constituted to investigate the matter. According to a statement from health officials, the committee will examine whether the C-sections were medically necessary, whether clinical protocols were followed, identify any lapses, fix responsibility, and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents.

Vijay Bhaskar, Medical Superintendent of Banswada and in-charge District Coordinator of Health Services (DCHS) for Kamareddy, told The Hindu that a total of 10 C-sections were performed over the two days — five on July 9 and five on July 10. The first patient developed hypotension late on the night of July 9 and was referred to Government General Hospital, Nizamabad. Another woman complained of chest pain on the evening of July 10 and was also referred to the same facility.

Initially, the cases appeared unrelated, and there was no immediate concern. However, when three more women developed complications and required referral on July 11, officials recognised a pattern and started a detailed review. Mr. Bhaskar inspected the operation theatre, reviewed the drugs used during the surgeries, and visited the referred patients at Nizamabad. After finding that three women had low urine output and showed signs suggestive of acute kidney injury, he decided to shift them to NIMS, where dialysis facilities were available. Eventually, all five women were shifted to the Hyderabad hospital for treatment.

Of the five women, three underwent dialysis. Two responded well to treatment; their kidney function improved, dialysis was discontinued, and they were moved to the general ward. One patient continues to receive treatment in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU). Among the remaining five women who underwent C-sections at Banswada but did not develop complications, seven of the total 10 mothers have been discharged after suture removal, while the others are reported to be recovering.

Mr. Bhaskar said a preliminary report has been submitted to the government, and a final report incorporating additional observations and interactions with patients undergoing treatment is being prepared.
