Five drown in Cauvery river near Muthathi in Karnataka

Mandya, Karnataka – Five individuals, including four women who were related to each other, drowned in the Cauvery river near Muthathi in Mandya district on June 24 evening. The deceased have been identified as Vijayamma (50), Shwetha (38), Chaitra (20), Priyanka (28), and Mahesh (the driver of the car they travelled in). All four women were related to one another.

According to Superintendent of Mandya district police V. J. Shobha Rani, the group had hired a car from Bengaluru to visit Muthathi for temple visits. After offering prayers at temples in Channapatna and Muthathi, they went to the Cauvery river for a dip.

Vijayamma was the first to lose her balance after being unable to ascertain the depth at a particular spot in the river. When she began drowning, the others attempted to rescue her, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Along with Vijayamma, three of her relatives and the car driver also drowned.

Personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services recovered the bodies, which were taken to a local mortuary for further procedures. Authorities have urged visitors to exercise caution in and around rivers, particularly during monsoon season when water levels and currents can be unpredictable.
