Eye Care Services Expanded for 1,000 More Individuals with Psychiatric Conditions in Tamil Nadu
TwinTech Healthcare Services, a unit of TwinTech Institute of Education Trust based in Chennai, has announced the expansion of comprehensive eye care services for persons living with psychiatric conditions and residents of rehabilitation centres. Over the past year, the initiative has already reached over 1,200 individuals across four psychiatric rehabilitation centres in Tamil Nadu.
During these examinations, medical teams identified a range of eye-related issues including uncorrected refractive errors, advanced cataracts, glaucoma suspects, and other risks. The programme is now being extended to cover an additional 1,000 individuals with psychiatric conditions in Chennai and neighbouring districts.
Currently, the team is conducting comprehensive eye examinations for residents of psychiatric rehabilitation centres in Perambalur district. The effort is led by doctors Krishna Kumar and A. Mahalingam, who together bring over 30 years of experience in eye care services, according to a press release from the organisation.
This initiative highlights the importance of integrating eye health into the broader healthcare framework for persons with mental health conditions, who often face barriers in accessing specialised medical services. By providing on-site screenings and follow-up care, TwinTech aims to prevent vision loss and improve quality of life for this vulnerable population.
The expansion comes at a time when awareness about the intersection of mental health and physical well-being is increasing. Regular eye examinations can detect not only vision problems but also systemic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, which are more prevalent among individuals with psychiatric disorders due to medication side effects and lifestyle factors.
TwinTech Healthcare Services has not disclosed a timeline for completing the expanded examinations, but stated that the programme will continue to operate in coordination with rehabilitation centre authorities to ensure maximum coverage and minimal disruption to residents' routines.
