Europe Heatwave: Germany Sets New Record at 41.3°C, Events Cancelled

Europe is experiencing a severe heatwave, with Germany recording its highest-ever temperature of 41.3°C in the south-western city of Saarbrücken on Friday. This provisional record broke the previous June highs in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

The heatwave has already claimed lives in Spain and France, and authorities have cancelled concerts and other public events due to health risks. France's health minister expressed concern about deaths occurring at home, even as the temperature peak passes.

The World Meteorological Organization warned of major impacts on health, ecosystems, agriculture, and labour. Spokeswoman Clare Nullis stated, 'We need to get used to it, unfortunately,' highlighting the increasing frequency of such events due to climate change.

Belgium unofficially recorded 40°C in Kleine Brogel near the Dutch border, while the Netherlands recorded 39.4°C in Limburg. The UK saw a provisional June record of 37.1°C at Cavendish in Suffolk. According to AFP, at least 150 million people across Europe faced temperatures above 35°C on Friday.

Czech meteorologists predict that a 2012 record of 40.4°C could be broken on Saturday, and Austrian forecasters expect their national record to fall on Sunday. Balkan countries are also experiencing extreme heat, with Serbia forecasting up to 39°C over the weekend.

In Switzerland, the Beznau nuclear power plant shut down both reactors on Friday because the River Aare reached 25°C. The operator stated the measure was to protect the environment, as water used for cooling, when returned, is warmer.
