Ebola Outbreak in Congo: Rare Strain Spreads Faster Than Response Efforts

In Goma, a city in the Democratic Republic of Congo's North Kivu province, health workers are battling a severe Ebola outbreak caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus. Dr. Kerry Dierberg, an emergency medical coordinator with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), reports that the outbreak is outpacing response efforts. “There are big gaps in surveillance, diagnosis, contact tracing and community engagement,” she said.

The Bundibugyo strain kills 30% to 50% of those infected and currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment. As of the latest official data, there have been 933 confirmed infections and at least 245 deaths. However, field doctors caution that due to limited testing, the true numbers may be higher. “Cases may be going undetected, particularly in remote and insecure areas,” Dr. Dierberg noted.

Goma, a transit hub with over a million people, has a busy cross-border economy with Rwanda, raising concerns about regional spread. The outbreak is occurring in areas already strained by conflict, trade, and mining, which complicates healthcare delivery. MSF is running a 24-hour health centre with two shifts, but challenges remain.

India has not reported any confirmed cases of the Bundibugyo virus. Suspected returnees from the DRC have tested negative in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Kerala. The Indian Health Ministry has activated surveillance protocols including airport screening, isolation wards, and testing. The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) are coordinating efforts.

Compared to previous Bundibugyo outbreaks in Uganda (2007–2008) and the DRC (2012), the current one has already exceeded those case numbers. The lack of rapid tests specific to this strain, unlike the Zaire species, delays diagnosis. Confirmation requires specialized PCR testing available only in a few labs. “Delays in diagnosis can affect timely isolation and make it more difficult to rapidly break chains of transmission,” Dr. Dierberg explained.

MSF's emergency programme manager Trish Newport emphasized the need for more international support. “The number of expert medical organisations responding on the ground is still far too limited,” she said. The outbreak underscores the challenges of containing a rare, lethal virus in a conflict-affected region with weak health infrastructure.
