Drone Strike on Cargo Ship in Strait of Hormuz Strains West Asia Ceasefire

Days after Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding, the fragile ceasefire in West Asia came under fresh strain. According to US officials, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) allegedly struck the Singapore-flagged cargo ship Ever Lovely with a drone in the Strait of Hormuz. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed that the vessel was hit near Oman. Iran subsequently warned that ships navigating outside designated routes would not be guaranteed safe passage. In response, the United Nations International Maritime Organization paused its escort programme in the region. Oil prices rose by 2 per cent following the attack. The IRGC also reportedly redirected two Panama-flagged ships.

In Madhya Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to the defence of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav amid questions over land purchases by his family and associated firms in Ujjain. An investigation by The Indian Express found that since Yadav took office in December 2023, his family and related entities acquired at least 137 plots spanning 168 acres, valued at around Rs 45 crore. The BJP dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, asserting that the transactions were legal and that scrutiny should be limited to the Chief Minister's immediate family. Officials denied any link between the land deals and government decisions. The Opposition has demanded a probe, citing concerns over propriety and potential conflict of interest.

In an opinion piece published today, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stated that her absence from the country 'is not silence' and vowed to continue standing with the people and the Awami League. She accused the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led government and the earlier interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus of suppressing democracy. Hasina claimed that the February 12 election lacked legitimacy because the Awami League was barred from contesting. She urged party workers to remain united and pledged to return to Bangladesh to continue the struggle for democracy through political and legal means.

Months after the Supreme Court directed states and Union Territories to establish a robust trauma response system for road accident victims, implementation remains poor. Data from 34 states and UTs show that none have fully adopted the prescribed framework. The court mandated five measures: integrating the 112 emergency number, deploying GPS-equipped ambulances, enacting Good Samaritan protections, maintaining trauma registries, and standardising rescue protocols for the 'golden hour'. Most of the eight states that account for nearly two-thirds of India's road fatalities have yet to integrate emergency services under 112. The directions stemmed from a petition by the SaveLIFE Foundation seeking a uniform trauma care system; delayed emergency care is estimated to contribute to at least 30 per cent of trauma-related deaths.

The controversy surrounding a viral video allegedly featuring Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has highlighted how artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a powerful political tool ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The Mann video row has become a test case for how deepfakes and AI-generated content can blur the line between fact and misinformation. Political parties are increasingly using AI-generated videos, voice cloning, memes, and synthetic content to shape public narratives. While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) claims the content targeting Mann was fabricated using AI, the opposition has questioned the allegation. Experts warn that weak regulation of AI-generated political content could fuel misinformation and erode public trust during elections.
