DR Congo reports 2,011 Ebola deaths in fastest-spreading outbreak

Democratic Republic of Congo has confirmed that the death toll from its current Ebola outbreak has reached 2,011, according to data released on Tuesday. The figure marks the latest milestone in what health officials describe as the fastest-spreading outbreak of the virus on record.

Data from the country's public health institute, seen by Reuters, also recorded 4,381 confirmed cases across five provinces. The rapid spread has been attributed to delayed detection, ongoing conflict and strained health services, which have limited the ability of authorities to respond effectively.

This is Congo's 17th outbreak of Ebola. It is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, for which there are no approved vaccines or treatments. The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, noting that cases have also been reported in neighbouring Uganda.

A study published last month in the journal Science suggested that transmission may have begun as early as January in the eastern province of Ituri. The research identified more than 500 suspected cases between mid-January and May 15, indicating that the virus may have been circulating undetected for weeks before the outbreak was officially recognised.

Efforts to trace contacts, isolate patients and curb transmission have been hampered by shortages of medical supplies and insecurity in affected regions. Health workers face risks from armed groups, and some communities have resisted containment measures, complicating the response.

The current outbreak has already become the second-largest Ebola epidemic on record, after the West Africa outbreak of 2014-2016, which saw 28,616 cases and 11,310 deaths across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, according to the WHO. Comparing the timelines, it took nearly five months for the West African outbreak to reach 1,000 deaths. Congo's current outbreak crossed that mark in less than three months, and deaths have jumped from 1,000 to 2,000 in under a month.

The scale of this outbreak underscores the urgent need for a coordinated international response, including enhanced surveillance, community engagement and support for local health systems. The WHO and partner organisations have called for increased funding and access to affected areas to prevent further spread.

The Congolese government and health agencies continue to work on containment, but the combination of a deadly virus with no approved medical countermeasures and a challenging operational environment makes this one of the most difficult outbreaks in recent history.
