Doctors' Association Criticises Speaker's Remarks, Opposes NEET Abolition, Seeks Reforms

The Doctors' Association for Social Equality on Wednesday criticised Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar's reported anti-abortion remarks, stating that such statements undermine women's reproductive rights. The association urged the Speaker to refrain from making further comments of this nature.

Speaking at a press conference in Chennai, the association also opposed the State government's resolution calling for the nationwide abolition of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Instead, the association argued that Tamil Nadu should seek a permanent exemption for undergraduate, postgraduate and super-speciality medical seats under its control.

The association contended that the abolition of NEET could benefit private medical colleges and deemed universities, while increasing the financial burden on poor and middle-class students. It also disputed the Health Minister's arguments linking NEET to rural healthcare shortages, pointing out that over 1,000 NEET-qualified doctors are currently serving in rural Primary Health Centres.

According to the association, NEET is not the sole reason for the lower representation of disadvantaged students in medical education. It called for an expert committee to examine the issue in depth and to suggest measures for improving access.

The association further demanded an increase in educational assistance for students admitted under the 7.5% government-school quota in medical colleges. This quota, it noted, was designed to help students from government schools but requires additional financial support to be effective.

Several other demands were raised at the press meet. These included implementing the children's gold-ring scheme through the Revenue or Social Welfare Department instead of burdening doctors with the responsibility. The association also urged the government to drop attempts to appoint IAS officers to senior medical posts, arguing that such positions require specialised medical expertise.

The association called for retaining the post of Deputy Director of Tuberculosis, which it said faces the risk of being abolished or merged. It also demanded the implementation of reservation in contractual appointments within the health department, ensuring equitable representation.

Finally, the association asked the government to withdraw what it termed retaliatory action against Dr. Perumal Pillai, leader of the Government Doctors' Legal Battle Committee. The association alleged that Dr. Pillai was being targeted for his role in advocating for doctors' interests.

These demands come at a time of ongoing debates over medical education policy and healthcare administration in Tamil Nadu. The association's stance reflects a nuanced position that neither fully supports the state's blanket opposition to NEET nor ignores the challenges faced by underprivileged students.

The press conference highlighted the need for a balanced approach to medical admissions, rural healthcare, and the professional autonomy of doctors. The association urged the government to engage in constructive dialogue to address these issues.
