Delhi Ranks 120th in Global Liveability Index 2026; Indian Cities Lag Behind
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released its Global Liveability Index 2026, ranking 173 cities worldwide on factors such as stability, healthcare, culture, environment, education, and infrastructure. New Delhi placed 120th, followed by Mumbai (121st), Chennai (123rd), and Bengaluru (127th). Copenhagen, Denmark, topped the list, with Vienna, Austria, and Melbourne, Australia, taking second and third places.
Compared to the previous year, New Delhi and Mumbai’s rankings remained unchanged, while ten Chinese cities improved their positions. The report noted that Western Europe remains the strongest region for liveability, but its average score has stagnated. In contrast, Asia’s average score has risen, indicating progress in many cities.
The index also highlighted challenges in the Gulf region, citing the Iran war as a factor undermining stability. However, the report did not elaborate on the specific impact on individual cities.
Srikanth Viswanathan, Chief Executive Officer of Janaagraha, a non-profit focused on urban governance, commented, “A worse ranking means we become less attractive to global investors and talent. We need to make our cities stronger and more liveable.” His remarks reflect concerns about urban planning and governance in Indian cities.
