Delhi power theft crackdown reduces daily losses by 34,000 units in high-loss area
The Delhi government has reported a significant reduction in electricity theft in Kamruddin Nagar, a high-loss pocket in West Delhi, following a targeted crackdown. According to Power Minister Ashish Sood, the drive prevented the theft of over one million units of power, with daily losses at the targeted locations decreasing by approximately 34,000 units.
The operation focused on Kamruddin Nagar, which falls under the Mundka division, where aggregate technical and commercial losses stood at 56.4%, resulting in an annual financial loss of around Rs 24.4 crore, as per Delhi government data.
The minister's office stated that illegal commercial and industrial units were the primary sources of theft, drawing power through unauthorised connections from overhead lines. The government announced that the drive will be extended to other high-loss pockets of the capital, with additional police personnel deployed for raids and data analytics used to identify areas and consumers suspected of power theft.
The figures provided by the government have not been independently verified. The crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to reduce power theft and improve the financial health of power distribution companies in Delhi.
