Sealdah station daily footfall crosses one million after Eastern Railway expands services
Sealdah station, one of Eastern Railway's busiest terminals, has surpassed one million daily passengers in 2026. The milestone follows an expansion by the Sealdah Division, which added 68 new passenger trains and 613 additional Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trips across its suburban network.
According to railway officials, the division also introduced 1,035 additional Mail/Express (Train on Demand) trips, extended 26 existing services, and added two new Mail/Express trains originating from Sealdah. These measures are aimed at reducing congestion and improving connectivity for the region's commuters.
To manage the increased footfall, the station recently opened a fourth entry point, 'Prafulla Dwar'. The new gate is equipped with booking counters, train indication boards, and Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs). Dedicated ramps have been built to ensure access for passengers with disabilities.
The division has also introduced a Platform Nomination System to streamline passenger movement. This system is designed to reduce confusion and help passengers locate their trains more efficiently.
Another key addition is the introduction of air-conditioned local trains on busy suburban routes, catering to students, tourists, and patients travelling to Kalyani AIIMS. The move is part of a broader effort to improve comfort on daily commutes.
Rajeev Saxena, Divisional Railway Manager, Sealdah, said, "Our ultimate goal is to ensure that every passenger feels valued from the moment they arrive at the station until they reach their destination. Whether it's easing daily suburban commutes with AC locals, upgrading infrastructure under the Amrit Bharat scheme, or ensuring hassle-free entries with dedicated gates like the Central Gate, every step we take is focused on passenger comfort, safety, and modern convenience."
Saxena also highlighted facilities at the new gate, including ATVMs for instant ticketing and a streamlined pick-up and drop-off zone. He noted that upcoming app-cab connectivity would further ease last-mile travel.
Under the Amrit Bharat railway station scheme, Sealdah station has undergone a visual and operational upgrade. Officials say the changes are intended to make the station more passenger-friendly and efficient.
The rise in daily footfall reflects the growing reliance on suburban rail networks in the Kolkata metropolitan area. With the addition of new services and infrastructure improvements, the Sealdah Division aims to meet the demands of a rapidly urbanising region while keeping passenger convenience at the forefront.
