Delhi High Court Orders Preservation of Records in July 20 Protest Crackdown Case

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the Delhi police to respond to allegations of excessive force used against protesters during the 'Chalo Sansad' march on July 20. The march was organised by a political party to protest against certain government policies.

The court also ordered that all footage and records related to the event be preserved for a thorough investigation into the allegations. A Division Bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia, hearing two public interest litigations, refused to accept the police's argument that aggrieved individuals could pursue legal action separately.

The Bench directed that all police records and footage, as prescribed under the standard operating procedure (SOP), be preserved. The court's order comes amid reports of injuries to several protesters and claims of brutalities by law enforcement.

The High Court's intervention highlights the importance of accountability and transparency in handling public protests. The next hearing is scheduled for a later date, with the police required to submit their response.
