Delhi HC directs Centre to provide interim additional security to MP Pappu Yadav

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed the Central government to immediately provide an additional Personal Security Officer (PSO) to Purnia Member of Parliament Pappu Yadav. The directive comes while the Union Home Ministry considers his request for Y+ security cover.

Mr. Yadav had filed a writ petition seeking enhanced security cover, citing alleged death threats following his participation in protests in Parliament. These protests were against issues including the NEET examination controversy and an alleged theft of donations at the Ram Temple. According to the petition, he had made a representation to the Home Ministry on August 5 and was awaiting a response.

During the hearing, the counsel representing the Central government stated that 'adequate security' had already been provided to the MP. The counsel also informed the court that the request for enhanced security would be decided within three weeks. The court, however, directed that an additional PSO be provided to Mr. Yadav immediately as an interim measure.

Security cover in India is provided based on threat perception and is categorised into different levels, with Y+ being a specific tier of armed protection. The final decision on whether to upgrade Mr. Yadav's security remains with the Union Home Ministry, which will consider the matter in due course.

The court's order ensures that Mr. Yadav receives additional security protection until the Home Ministry completes its review of his request.
