Delhi Cab Driver with Criminal Record Charged with Rape and Murder of Minor; Police Probe Ride-Hailing Firms
The Delhi Police have reportedly written to three major cab aggregators — Uber, Ola, and Rapido — seeking details on their driver verification processes and employment history after a cab driver with a criminal record was arrested for the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in the capital.
The accused, identified as Bashu Kumar Singh (29), had been working with all three app-based cab platforms. According to police sources, Singh has five criminal cases registered against him in Bihar.
Early Monday morning, Singh allegedly kidnapped the minor girl who was sleeping on a pavement, raped, and killed her. He was arrested later the same day. The Indian Express reached out to Uber, Ola, and Rapido for comments but received no response at the time of publication.
The case has raised serious concerns about the background verification processes employed by ride-hailing companies. The Delhi Police are expected to scrutinize the hiring practices of these firms to prevent individuals with criminal histories from being employed as drivers.
Authorities have emphasized the need for stricter verification protocols and have called for greater accountability from cab aggregators. The incident has sparked outrage among citizens, with demands for enhanced safety measures for passengers, particularly women and children.
