CPI(M) Questions Government Claims on Power Tariff Cuts

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has accused the Andhra Pradesh government of misleading the public on electricity tariff reductions. Party state secretary V. Srinivasa Rao alleged that the government imposed heavy financial burdens on consumers through electricity policies while failing to disclose the full implications of power purchase agreements.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Mr. Rao demanded transparency regarding the costs of power imported from Rajasthan under agreements linked to the Adani-SECI arrangement. He questioned the government's claims of reducing power tariffs, arguing that marginal reductions were highlighted after larger financial burdens had been imposed through previous revisions.

The CPI(M) leader also raised concerns over the plight of tobacco farmers in Prakasam district, stating that market prices had fallen sharply despite the Chief Minister's pre-election assurances of remunerative rates. He urged both the state and central governments to intervene in the market to protect farmers' interests.

Mr. Rao criticised restrictions on urea supply to tenant farmers, alleging that many were forced to purchase fertilizers from the black market. He called for ensuring adequate fertilizer supply to all eligible farmers.

On transport policy, the CPI(M) opposed the move to hand over electric buses to private operators, arguing that the vehicles should remain under the management of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC). The party also condemned the privatisation of municipal services and assets, expressing support for ongoing protests by municipal workers, employees, and teachers.

Mr. Rao demanded a judicial inquiry into the alleged Sai Krishna custodial death case, stating that only an independent investigation could reveal the truth.
