BJP alleges discriminatory arrest of Kerala ideologue T.G. Mohandas
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala has condemned the arrest of Hindutva ideologue T.G. Mohandas, calling it “discriminatory.” The party also alleged that the arrest is a “drama” intended to divert public attention from lapses in flood relief operations and ongoing protests by the coastal community.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, BJP State general secretary S. Suresh said that while the controversial remarks made by Mr. Mohandas were unacceptable, the manner of his arrest raised serious questions about selective application of the law. Mr. Suresh pointed out that several individuals in Kerala who had issued threats—including threats to endanger the life of Prime Minister Narendra Modi—were still at large, allegedly protected by the United Democratic Front (UDF) government.
The statement did not specify the exact nature of Mr. Mohandas’s remarks or the circumstances leading to his arrest. However, it drew attention to what the BJP perceives as a double standard in the enforcement of legal provisions related to hate speech and threats.
Mr. Suresh's comments come amid heightened political tensions in Kerala, where the opposition BJP has frequently accused the ruling UDF of shielding its allies from legal scrutiny. The party has also been critical of the state government's handling of flood relief and the demands of the coastal community, which has been protesting for better compensation and rehabilitation measures.
The UDF government has not yet responded to the BJP’s allegations. Officials in the Kerala Police have declined to comment on the specific case, stating that legal proceedings are ongoing.
Political observers note that the arrest of T.G. Mohandas is likely to sharpen the rhetoric between the BJP and the UDF ahead of upcoming local body elections. The BJP has been trying to expand its footprint in Kerala, and issues of law and order, as well as perceived bias, are likely to feature prominently in its campaign.
Meanwhile, civil liberties groups have urged both the government and the BJP to respect due process and avoid politicising individual cases. They stress that threats to any individual, including the Prime Minister, should be investigated thoroughly, irrespective of the political affiliation of the accused.
The development also highlights the delicate balance between freedom of expression and the need to prevent incitement to violence. While Mr. Mohandas's remarks have drawn criticism from various quarters, the BJP's demand for equal treatment under the law reflects a broader concern about selective justice in the state.
