Congress Leaders Skip Independence Day Event for Second Year Running

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi did not attend the 80th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort on Thursday, marking the second consecutive year of their absence from the ceremonial event led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The decision to stay away comes amid strained relations between the ruling party and the Opposition, which have been evident during the recently concluded Monsoon Session of Parliament. Last year, Mr Gandhi's seating arrangement at the Red Fort had sparked a political controversy.

In 2024, Mr Gandhi, who holds the rank of a Cabinet minister as Leader of the Opposition, was seated in the second last row, deviating from the established protocol that places the Leader of the Opposition in the front row. The Opposition described this as an insult to the people's mandate, while the Defence Ministry, which organises the event, explained that the seating arrangement was adjusted to accommodate Olympians on the premises.

This year's absence further underscores the widening gap between the government and the opposition. The Monsoon Session, which concluded on Thursday, recorded low productivity, with both sides blaming each other for the repeated disruptions. Of the twelve bills passed during the session, only the anti-paper leak legislation received detailed discussion. The session began with student protests near Parliament on its first day, July 20.

In addition to skipping the Independence Day function, the Congress, along with the Trinamool Congress and the Samajwadi Party, boycotted the customary tea party hosted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla after the House was adjourned sine die. This move signals continued discord between the opposition bloc and the ruling establishment.

The absence of the two senior Congress leaders from the national event has drawn attention to the state of parliamentary decorum and the broader political climate. While the government has not officially commented on the matter, the Opposition has maintained that its actions are a protest against the alleged undermining of democratic institutions and procedures.

Political analysts note that such boycotts, while symbolic, reflect deeper challenges in India's parliamentary democracy. The tradition of attending Independence Day celebrations is seen as an expression of unity and respect for the nation, irrespective of political differences. The repeated absence of the principal opposition leaders raises questions about the health of political dialogue and the need for constructive engagement.

Neither the Congress party nor Mr Gandhi's office has issued an official statement explaining the reason for the absence this year. However, the sequence of events—from the seating controversy to the boycott of parliamentary courtesy events—suggests a deliberate protest against the government's approach to the opposition.

As the nation marks its 80th Independence Day, the absence of key opposition figures serves as a reminder that political consensus on national occasions remains an elusive goal. The hope is that both sides will find common ground to uphold the spirit of democratic institutions and ensure that the voices of all citizens are represented and respected.
