Congress leader demands probe into Ram Temple donation embezzlement, blames BJP
Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai has called for an independent investigation into allegations of embezzlement of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of failing to ensure transparency. In a statement to The Hindu on Tuesday, Rai said the episode is the biggest proof of the government's failure, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath should be held accountable because they have taken credit for the temple's construction.
Rai said he has sent a detailed letter to the Chief Minister demanding an independent forensic and financial investigation into the matter. He alleged that instead of addressing core questions, government representatives and political spokespersons are engaging in media accusations and diversionary tactics against the opposition.
The temple, Rai said, is the supreme symbol of faith and cultural consciousness for millions of Indians. He noted that the government presented the temple's construction, inauguration, and consecration as a major national achievement. He argued that the same government should now accept responsibility for alleged theft of offerings and answer serious questions about financial management and administrative procedures.
According to reports, eight accused have been arrested in connection with the alleged donation embezzlement case and have been sent to judicial custody until July 27.
The allegations come amid ongoing political tensions in Uttar Pradesh, where the Ram Temple is a significant religious and political symbol. The BJP government has not yet responded to Rai's demand for an independent probe.
