Congress Demands Judicial Probe into MP Chief Minister's Family Land Deals in Ujjain
The Congress party on Thursday questioned the lack of response from Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership regarding allegations that Mr. Yadav's family and associates had engaged in large-scale land purchases in areas of Ujjain where development projects were planned. The party demanded either a public explanation from the Chief Minister or his resignation pending an inquiry.
Speaking at a press conference at the All India Congress Committee office in New Delhi, former MLA Praveen Pathak noted that the Chief Minister had not responded for ten days after the allegations were made. The issue, he said, was not merely about land purchases but whether access to power and prior knowledge of government decisions had been used for private gain. Mr. Pathak asked why the Chief Minister had remained silent if there were no irregularities.
The Congress leader alleged that the timing and location of the purchases indicated serious irregularities, suggesting a possible link between the transactions and infrastructure projects announced or advanced in the region during Mr. Yadav's tenure as a minister and later as Chief Minister.
Mr. Pathak called for a judicial inquiry under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court judge, and also urged investigations by the Enforcement Directorate, the Income Tax Department, and the Lokayukta. He mentioned that the Madhya Pradesh Congress unit, including state president Jitu Patwari and Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar, had repeatedly raised the matter without any response from the state government.
Outlining the party's next steps, Mr. Pathak said the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee would hold press conferences across the state, launch an online portal for corruption complaints, and stage a protest outside the Chief Minister's residence in Bhopal on July 15. The Congress Legislature Party would raise the issue during the Assembly session starting July 20, and party workers would seek answers during the Chief Minister's district visits. If no action is taken, Mr. Pathak warned of a historic agitation in Ujjain, reiterating the demand for a white paper and a court-monitored judicial inquiry.
As of now, the Chief Minister's office and the BJP have not issued a formal response to the allegations.
