Congress backs Tamil Nadu's demand to freeze Lok Sabha seats for 25 years

The Congress party has extended its support to the Tamil Nadu government's stand on delimitation, endorsing the demand to freeze the number of Lok Sabha seats for 25 years. The move comes amid growing concerns among southern states that a fresh delimitation exercise based on population would reduce their representation in Parliament.

The Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister Vijay, has argued that any immediate reallocation of seats would unfairly penalise states that have successfully implemented family planning and population control measures. The state has urged the central government to defer the exercise for another 25 years to ensure equitable representation for all regions.

Congress leaders said on Monday that the party fully supports Tamil Nadu's position, calling it a matter of federal justice. They emphasised that the freeze on seats is essential to protect the interests of southern states, which have historically followed population stabilisation policies more effectively than their northern counterparts.

The issue of delimitation has become a flashpoint in Indian politics, with several southern states expressing apprehension that they would lose political weightage if seats are redrawn based on the latest census figures. The current freeze on Lok Sabha and state assembly seats was originally implemented in 1976 and extended until 2026 by the 84th Constitutional Amendment. With that deadline approaching, the debate has resurfaced.

Political analysts note that the Congress's backing of Tamil Nadu's stand is significant, as it signals a broader alignment with regional parties on the issue. The party's support could strengthen the collective bargaining power of southern states in any future negotiations on delimitation.

However, the stand also places Congress in a delicate position, as it must balance the demands of its own leaders from northern states, who are likely to benefit from a population-based redistribution. Party insiders suggest that the leadership is treading carefully to avoid alienating any regional bloc ahead of the next general election.

The delimitation exercise is mandated by the Constitution to ensure that constituencies reflect changes in population. Proponents of the exercise argue that it is necessary to maintain the principle of equal representation, while opponents contend that it would undermine the federal structure and create regional imbalances.

Tamil Nadu's demand for a 25-year freeze has found resonance in other southern states, including Kerala and Karnataka, which have also expressed reservations about the timing and methodology of the exercise. Several regional parties have called for a broader consensus before any changes are implemented.

The Union government has yet to respond formally to the Tamil Nadu government's appeal. Sources indicate that a high-level committee may be constituted to examine the implications of delimitation on different states, though no official announcement has been made.

As the debate unfolds, the Congress party's endorsement of Tamil Nadu's position adds a new dimension to the political discourse. It remains to be seen whether this will lead to a united front among southern states or further polarise the debate along regional lines.

For now, the focus is on ensuring that any decision on delimitation is taken in a fair and transparent manner, with due consideration to the principles of federalism and demographic realities.
