Chennai's ₹530 Crore Intelligent Transport System to Launch in August
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will launch the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in August, marking a significant step towards modernising urban mobility. The project, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aims to enhance traffic management, improve road safety, and upgrade public transport services through advanced technologies.
GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran described the project as a major move towards a safer and commuter-friendly city. The ₹530 crore initiative comprises two components: the Traffic Information and Management System (TIMS) for the Greater Chennai Traffic Police and the City Bus System (CBS) for the Metropolitan Transport Corporation.
Under TIMS, systems such as Adaptive Traffic Signal Control, Traffic Incident Detection, Variable Message Sign Boards, Red Light Violation Detection, Speed Limit Violation Detection, and Automatic Traffic Counters are being installed at strategic locations. So far, adaptive signals have been installed at 101 junctions and integrated with a temporary control centre. Red light violation detection is operational at 25 locations, and speed violation detection at three. Traffic incident detection systems are in place at 47 flyover locations, while variable message boards are installed at three spots to provide real-time updates.
A centralised Traffic Information and Management Centre is being built at the traffic police headquarters, expected to be ready by August 2026. For the bus system, the project includes equipping 3,500 MTC buses with Automatic Vehicle Location Systems, installing Passenger Information Systems at 616 bus stops, and deploying Depot Management Systems across 32 depots. These will enable real-time bus tracking and accurate arrival information for commuters.
Implementation is progressing with support from the corporation and state highways department. Power connections are being arranged, and minor junction improvements are underway. Where installation is technically infeasible, alternative locations have been identified to ensure optimal coverage.
