Chennai Pride Flag Hoisted Amid Calls for Trans Rights and Inclusion
Chennai, June 1, 2026: The rainbow flag was hoisted at the premises of Sahodaran, a community-based organisation, marking the beginning of Pride Month. Over 50 members of the LGBTQIA+ community gathered for the ceremony, chanting slogans for non-discrimination and inclusion.
The event also served as a platform to voice concerns over the recently passed Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Act, 2026. Participants expressed disappointment with the law, stating that it fails to address key issues faced by the community.
Among the 17 demands reiterated at the event were horizontal reservation in education and employment in Tamil Nadu, establishment of gender-neutral washrooms, and renaming the state's transgender welfare board to 'Thirunar Nala Variyam'.
Jaya, General Manager of Sahodaran, noted that while previous state governments had been sensitised to community concerns, the new government in Tamil Nadu presents both hope and uncertainty. 'We hope the Tamil Nadu Rainbow Coalition will be invited for a meeting with the current government so we can explain our challenges directly,' she said.
Fred Rogers, a trans man, highlighted that trans men are a minority within the LGBTQIA+ community and that the amendment act effectively erases them. 'We are just like any other human being. Why should we be discriminated against based on our identity?' he asked. For him, Pride 2026 is about being himself and finding joy, a feeling he wishes for his peers.
Employment remains a significant hurdle. Jaahanavi, a doctor who completed her MBBS in Russia, said she received multiple job offers from Chennai hospitals, only to have them withdrawn after disclosing her identity as a trans woman.
Archanaa Seker, a Chennai-based activist and member of the Tamil Nadu Rainbow Coalition, said Pride month and the upcoming march on June 28 are about equality, visibility, and the right to exist and love. 'There is a divisive world out there waiting to break spaces and movements like these. So it is important we find hope where it is and commit to reparation whenever things go wrong,' she said, adding that such unity is more important now than ever.
The Chennai Rainbow Pride march, now in its 18th year, is scheduled for June 28, 2026.
