Andhra Pradesh's new tourism push: tribal circuits, eco-tourism, and museum modernisation on the agenda

In a move aimed at unlocking the tourism potential of Andhra Pradesh, State Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh on Wednesday reviewed key initiatives with newly appointed officials, focusing on both promotion of travel destinations and the preservation of the State's rich archaeological heritage. The meetings, held at the Secretariat in Amaravati, mark the beginning of a coordinated effort to align tourism growth with cultural conservation.

During a session with Pattan Shetty Ravi Subhash, the newly appointed Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC), Mr. Durgesh directed officials to identify tourism opportunities in tribal areas and craft special development plans for these regions. The move is seen as an attempt to bring lesser-known destinations into the mainstream, potentially boosting local economies while showcasing the State's diverse cultural fabric.

The Minister also emphasised the importance of promoting eco-tourism and wellness tourism without disturbing the ecological balance. This dual focus on sustainability and economic growth reflects a broader trend in Indian tourism policy, where environmental preservation is increasingly recognised as a cornerstone of long-term viability. Mr. Durgesh further stressed the need to attract investments through the public-private partnership (PPP) mode and to expedite projects for which agreements have already been signed.

In their review of the new tourism policy and its allied policies, the Minister and the APTDC MD took into consideration feedback from experts and investors in the sector. They also assessed the progress of projects approved by the State Investment Promotion Board and the State Investment Promotion Committee. This consultative approach is intended to ensure that the policy remains responsive to ground realities and market demands.

To showcase Andhra Pradesh's tourism potential, Mr. Durgesh called for organising regional tourism festivals and for wider promotion of the State's destinations both within India and abroad. Such festivals could serve as platforms to highlight the State's natural beauty, cultural traditions, and culinary heritage, attracting both domestic and international visitors.

In a separate meeting, the Minister reviewed the preservation of the State's archaeological heritage and the development of museums with Revu Muthyala Raju, the newly appointed Commissioner of Archaeology and Museums. Mr. Durgesh underscored the need to protect ancient archaeological remains, historical structures, inscriptions, and artefacts for future generations. He also directed the department to modernise museums and make them more attractive to tourists, suggesting that museums should not be static repositories but dynamic spaces that engage visitors.

The Minister said the Archaeology Department should take a more active role in preserving ancient artefacts that reflect the State's history and cultural heritage. This includes not only conservation but also documentation, research, and public education. Mr. Muthyala Raju assured the Minister that a special action plan would be prepared for the conservation of archaeological heritage and the development of museums.

Andhra Pradesh is home to numerous historical sites, including the Buddhist stupas at Amaravati, the temples of Tirupati, and the ruins of ancient kingdoms. However, many of these sites suffer from neglect and lack of infrastructure. The renewed focus on heritage preservation is expected to address these gaps, while also creating new opportunities for tourism-led growth.

Experts in the field have welcomed the move, noting that tourism and heritage preservation are mutually reinforcing. Well-preserved heritage sites attract tourists, and tourism revenues can fund further conservation efforts. However, they also caution that development must be carried out with sensitivity to the cultural and environmental significance of these sites.

The Minister's directives come at a time when the tourism sector is recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. With travel restrictions easing and domestic tourism rebounding, states across India are competing to attract visitors. Andhra Pradesh's emphasis on niche segments such as eco-tourism, wellness tourism, and tribal tourism could give it a distinct edge in this competitive landscape.

As the State moves forward with its plans, the focus will be on implementation. The appointment of new officials at the helm of APTDC and the Archaeology Department signals a fresh start, and their immediate tasks will include translating the Minister's vision into concrete action. For the tourism industry and heritage enthusiasts alike, the coming months will reveal whether these initiatives succeed in striking the right balance between development and preservation.
