Central Vista to be renamed 'Kartavya Bhawan area', announces Union Minister Manohar Lal
Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal announced on Sunday that the Central Vista area, encompassing the stretch from Rashtrapati Bhawan to India Gate, should now be referred to as the 'Kartavya Bhawan area'. The name is derived from the new secretariat buildings being constructed as part of the government's redevelopment project.
Speaking at the 172nd foundation day event of the Central Public Works Department, the Minister drew parallels to historical renamings after independence. He noted that the Vice-Regal Lodge and Council House, built during British rule, were renamed Rashtrapati Bhawan and Parliament House, respectively. Similarly, the entire Central Vista area is now proposed to be called Kartavya Bhawan area.
The government is currently redeveloping the Central Vista, with plans for 10 new secretariat buildings. To date, three buildings have been completed and named Kartavya Bhawan 1, 2, and 3. Additionally, Rajpath has already been renamed Kartavya Path. The redevelopment aims to provide modern office spaces for government ministries and improve the overall aesthetic of the area.
