CCTV Footage Shows Stone Hurled at TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee's Kolkata Home; Police Yet to Register Case
Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday released CCTV footage on social media that appears to show a man on a motorcycle throwing stones at the gate of his Kolkata residence. According to Banerjee, the individual broke a window pane on the first floor using a large stone.
The footage, which Banerjee said captured the incident from early Tuesday, has led to a fresh exchange of allegations between the TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal. The video shows a helmeted rider in a blue T-shirt stopping his motorcycle, picking up a stone, and hurling it twice toward the building.
As of now, the police have not filed a case in connection with the matter.
In a post on X, Banerjee stated that the incident reflects not just a breakdown of law and order but also what he called the 'complete normalization of violence under BJP's goonda raj.' He questioned the absence of police and suggested that the attacker acted with impunity, implying state protection for such acts.
The Diamond Harbour MP also criticised the newly proposed West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill, 2026, which allows preventive detention for up to 12 months without trial. Banerjee asked whether the Bill would apply to 'BJP-backed criminals.'
Responding to the allegations, BJP MLA Dipak Kumar Haldar from Diamond Harbour dismissed them, calling it a 'desperate attempt' by Banerjee to remain relevant. Haldar suggested that Banerjee might be seeking administrative support, such as enhanced security.
This incident comes amid a Calcutta High Court directive on political violence. Hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) regarding assaults on political leaders, a Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Partha Sarathi Chatterjee ordered the West Bengal government to file a report detailing incidents of stone and egg-throwing targeting TMC leaders since the 2026 Assembly election results. The court termed such actions a 'social evil' and directed police to formulate guidelines ensuring human rights for all.
Banerjee has been targeted multiple times since the election results. On May 30, he was attacked by a mob in Sonarpur while visiting families affected by post-poll violence, leading to arrests and heightened political tensions.
